Keeping White Roofs White – Reflective White Roof Coatings with Asphaltic Bleed Resistant Technology

Presented by Dr. Brent Crenshaw

May 15, 2024

EPS is well known in the coatings industry for the bleed blocking technology it has incorporated into acrylic latexes. This same bleed blocking technology has now been incorporated into EPS 2719, a resin specially designed for use in reflective roof coatings over asphaltic substrates.  EPS 2719 can be used as a base coat under both acrylic and silicone topcoats or alone as a complete base coat/top coat system to maintain the whitest roofs in the market.

New Acrylic Binder for High Performance Waterborne Low VOC Direct-to-Metal Coatings: Resin and Coating Formulation Interactions

Presented by Chris LeFever

Recorded on December 5, 2019

Waterborne acrylic emulsions have long served as resins for general industrial applications. However, emulsion polymers at low VOC often lack the capability of balancing hardness, adhesion, and anti-corrosive performance, thus limiting their use in direct-to-metal (DTM) applications.

Factors that influence successful DTM formulations will be discussed, including pigment volume concentration, extender chemistry, extender particle size, and polymer compositional variables.

Improving Adhesion to TPO with Waterborne Acrylic Resins

Presented by Dr. Brent Crenshaw

Recorded on October 29, 2019

As the coatings industry converts more to waterborne technologies, strategies once used to improve adhesion are no longer an option. For example, low surface energy substrates such as thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) membranes or ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM) membranes are notoriously difficult to adhere to. This is due to the lack of chemical functionality on the membrane surface to improve adhesion. This is particularly true on unweathered substrates.

This talk will present an overview of common substrates and data will be presented demonstrating how newly developed waterborne acrylic resins and their coatings formulation can impact, and in the case of resin choice, dramatically improve adhesion, thus enabling conversion away from solvent-borne technologies.

Direct To Metal Balancing Act – Minimizing Applied Cost while Maximizing Protective Performance in Waterborne Coatings

Presented by Chris LeFever

Recorded on August 23, 2018

For years, styrene-acrylic emulsions have been used as waterborne solutions for anticorrosive applications. Many of these polymers have been able to reduce VOC content to between 100-200g/L. However, due to increased regulatory pressure, developing polymers with even lower VOC capabilities is necessary.  To address the market need in this area, EPS has developed a next-generation, 50g/L capable, styrene-acrylic emulsion with the ability to pass extended wet adhesion tests, withstand thin film corrosion testing, and rapidly develop anti-blocking properties.

Direct To Metal Balancing Act – Minimizing Applied Cost while Maximizing Protective Performance in Waterborne Coatings

Presented by Chris LeFever

August 23, 2018

For years, styrene-acrylic emulsions have been used as waterborne solutions for anticorrosive applications. Many of these polymers have been able to reduce VOC content to between 100-200g/L. However, due to increased regulatory pressure, the need to develop polymers with even lower VOC capabilities is necessary. With this push comes the need for binders with lower filming temperature; these often have an adverse effect on a number of DTM performance properties. The most prevalent of these are hardness, block resistance and corrosion resistance. To address the market need in this area, EPS has developed a next generation, 50g/L capable, styrene-acrylic emulsion with the ability to pass extended wet adhesion tests, withstand thin film corrosion testing, and rapidly develop anti-blocking properties. This next generation technology provides a regulatory compliant and low VOC emulsion capable of providing the performance necessary for demanding applications.
